Important Statements and Equations used in Problems of Ages :

  • If the present age is given as p, then q times the present age = ‘qp’
  • If the present age is given as p, then age q years ago = p – q.
  • If the present age is given as p, then 1/qth of the age is p/q.

Below given are some of the frequent expressions that should be remembered . In all the given expression, we assume x as the present age of a man.

  • Man’s age six years ago = (x – 6)
  • The woman is thrice as old as man five years ago = (Woman’s age : 3(x-5))

Some common types of age-related problems encountered in mathematics:

  1. Age Difference Problems: These problems involve determining the age of one person based on their relationship with another person. For example, “John is 5 years older than Mary. The sum of their ages is 35. How old is each person?”

  2.  Age Ratio Problems: These problems involve establishing the ratio between the ages of different individuals and using that ratio to determine specific ages. For instance, “The ratio of John’s age to Sarah’s age is 3:5. If the sum of their ages is 64, how old is each person?”

  3. Age in the Past or Future Problems: These problems require finding a person’s current age based on information about their age in the past or future. For example, “10 years ago, Sarah’s age was half of John’s age. If the sum of their ages now is 60, how old is each person?”

  4. Family Age Problems: These problems involve determining the ages of multiple family members based on their relationships or given information. For instance, “The sum of the ages of a father and son is 60. The father is twice as old as the son. How old are they?”

Let us assume Max’s current age as m.

Then, Nick's current age will be =3m.

m + 12 = \frac{3m + 12}{2}

2(m + 12) = (3m + 12)

2( m + 12) = 3m + 12

2m + 24 = 3m + 12

m = 12

nicks present age = 3m = 36

Nicks age 6 years hence= 36 + 6 = 42

Hence Option D is the correct one.

2. 4 children are born at intervals of 2 years. On adding their ages, we get the sum 40 years. How old is the eldest child?

If the youngest child’s age is assumed as a.

Then, ages of all the four children can be defined as a , (a+2), (a+4), (a+6)

Given, a + (a+2) + (a+4) + (a+6) = 40

4a = 40 – 6 – 4 – 2

4a = 28

a = 7

Hence the youngest kid is 7 and the eldest one is 7 + 6 = 13years

Hence Option B is the correct one.

3. 6 children are born, each at an interval of 1.5 years. On adding the ages of all the 6 children, we get the sum as 60. How old is the youngest child?

If the youngest child’s age is assumed as p.

Then, six children will be, p, (p+1.5), (p+3), (p+4.5), (p+6), (p+7.5)

Given in the question, p + (p+1.5) + (p+3) + (p+4.5) + (p+6) + (p+7.5) = 60

6p = 60 – (7.5+6+4.5+3+1.5)

6p =60 – 22.5

p = 6.25

Therefore, the youngest child is 6.25 years.

Hence option D is the correct one.

4. Ross’s age is 2 years more than his friend Sam’s age. 12 years hence, his age will be 16  years less than  twice the age of Sam at that time. Determine the age of Ross after 12 years.

Let’s assume Sam’s current age as s.

Then, Ross’s will be r = (s + 2)

r + 12 = 2(s + 12) - 16

s + 2 + 12 =  2s + 24 - 16

s = 6

r = s + 2

r = 8

Age of Ross after 12 years = 12 + 8 = 20

Hence option A is the correct one.

5. Samantha told her office colleague Monika that when Monika was born, Samantha was as old as Monika’s present age.” If Samantha’s current age is 36, how old was Monika 4 years ago?

Let Monika’s present age be a.

Then, Samantha’s age at the time Monika was born= (36-a) = a

2a = 36

a= 18.

6. A father said to his daughter Amma, “At the time of your birth, I was double of your present age.” If the daughter’s age at present is 15 years, identify What the father’s age 5 years later?

Present age of Amma= 15 (given)

Father’s age at the time of Amma’s birth= Twice her present age.

Therefore, her father’s age at present will be (15*2) + 15 = 45

Hence, the father’s age after five years will be, 45+5 = 50.

7. A father was twice the age of his son Jack 5 years ago, and 7 years; hence, Jack would be one-third of his father. Find in what ratio is their current age.

Given, 5 years before Father’s age= Twice Jack’s age.

Let Jack’s age be a so father’s age= 2a.

Now Father’s present age= 2a + 5

Jack’s present age= a+5

After seven years: Father will be (2a + 5) + 7 and jack will be (a + 5) + 7.

Now as per the questions, father’s age would be thrice that of his son, 7 years hence.

(2a + 5) +7 = 3 [(a + 5) + 7]

(2a + 12) = 3[a + 12]

On Solving, we get,

a = 24

(2a + 5): (a + 5) = 53: 29

Hence Option A is the correct one.

8. Ross is 8 years younger than Luke. Their ages are in the proportion of 4:6. Calculate the present age of Ross?

9. Ashley and Dennis’s present age is in the proportion of 5:3. If the proportion of Ashley’s age 3 years back and Dennis’s age 3 years later would be 1:1. Calculate the proportion of Ashley’s age after 3 years and Dennis’s age three years before.

So, their present age can be 5x and 3x

Ashley’s age 3 years ago was 5x – 3

Dennis’s age 3 years hence will be 3x + 3

The ratio of Ashley’s age 3 years before and Dennis’s age 3 years hence is 1: 1

(5x - 3) / (3x + 3) = 1/1

2x = 6

x = 3

Now, we have to find the ratio among Ashley’s age 3 years later and Dennis’s age 3 years before.

Ashley’s age: (5x + 3)

Dennis’s age: (3x – 3)

On applying x’s value, we get:

(5x + 3) / (3x - 3) = 3:1

Therefore option A is the correct one.

10. Saif is one-fifth years old than his mother. After three years, his mother’s age will be four times that of Saif. How old would Saif’s mother be 3 years hence?

Let Saif’s age be a, hence his mother’s age= 5a

Given, 3 years hence mother’s age= 4 times of Saif’s.

= (5a+3) = 4(a+3)

If Saif’s age is 9, then mother’s age= 9*5 = 45 years

Further after 3 years mother’s age will become 45+3 = 48

Therefore Option D is the correct one.
