TCS NQT Reading Comprehension Quiz-1

Question 1

Time: 00:00:00
Nothing happens – the march of darkness halts at the door to the house, and all the clamor of fading falls silent, makes а thick skin like on hot milk cooling. The contours of the buildings against the backdrop of the sky stretch out into infinity, slowly lose their sharp angles, corners, edges. The dimming light takes the air with it – there’s nothing left to breathe. Now the dark soaks into my skin. Sounds have curled up inside themselves, withdrawn their snail’s eyes; the orchestra of the world has departed, vanishing into the park.

Question 4

Time: 00:00:00
Read the passage given below and answer questions

Man-made fibres are to be distinguished from natural fibres such as silk, cotton, and wool. Natural fibres also consist of polymers (in the case of biologically produced compounds such as cellulose and protein) but they emerge from the textile manufacturing process in a relatively unaltered state. Some man-made fibres too, are derived from naturally occurring polymers. For instance, Rayon and acetate, two of the first man-made fibres ever to be produced, are made of the same cellulose polymers that make up cotton, hemp, flax and the structural fibres of the wood. In the case of rayon and acetate, however, the cellulose is required in a radically altered state (usually from wood pulp operations) and is further modified in order to be regenerated into practical cellulose-based fibres. Rayon and Acetate, therefore, belong to a group of man-made fibres known as regenerated fibres.

Another group of man-made fibres (and by far the larger group) is the synthetic fibres. Synthetic fibres are made of polymers, like polyester, they do not occur naturally but instead that are produced entirely in the chemical plant or laboratory almost always from the byproduct of petroleum and natural gas. These polymers include nylon and polyethene Terephthalate-mentioned above, but they also include many other compounds such as acrylics, the Polyurethanes things and polypropylene. Synthetic fibres can be mass-produced to almost any set of required properties. Millions of tons of Synthetic fibres are produced every year.

The passage is mainly about_______

Different types of man-made fibers

Different types of man-made fibers

The processing of man-made fibers

The processing of man-made fibers

The difference between man-made and natural fibers

Question 6

Good health is a boon. It is the real jewel of life, the most precious possession of man. If a man loses his health, the world loses all its charms for him. A good wealth of health can be obtained in a number of ways. It needs regular exercise, good food, good thoughts, and cleanliness. A healthy person does not spend money on medicines and visiting doctors. Just opposite, a sluggish person is another form of disease.

The simplest and most traditional definition of health is that it is the freedom of sickness and diseases. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), a branch of the United Nations, health is physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease. Next to life itself, good health is the most precious gift and is necessary for a purposeful existence.

‘Sound mind in a sound body’ is an old saying. Healthy people can work for long hours without getting tired. They can enjoy all the pleasures of life, whereas unhealthy people can’t. The world has no charm for them. They are always worried due to their physical complications. Wealth has no importance for them.

Twinkling lights are just visible behind screens where the staff is putting the finishing touches on this year's Christmas displays, but in other parts of the shop, the lights are still off. John Lewis, the flagship store in Oxford Street, Central London, is bearing the scars of the pandemic.

A restaurant and cafe are closed as there is more stuff than customers on the furnishings floors. The fashion floor is also a depressing sight, with tags flagging big discounts on racks of unwanted dresses and office wear. Last week it emerged that, John Lewis had applied for planning permission to convert entire floors of the shop into office space, it's not hard to see why,

John Lewis, with its employee ownership and reputation for stealing customer service, still holds a special place in shoppers’ hearts. But while sister chain Waitrose along with other supermarkets, has thrived in the pandemic results published last week show the department store chain is in trouble.

Huge changes in shopper behavior, which have been accelerated by coronavirus mean the John Lewis website is now responsible for 60% of the chain sales -- up from 30 % pre-covid. This tilt towards the web means the department stores, as properties, and now deemed to be worth nearly Euro 500Mn and less than before ----- a reassessment in last week's results that sent the group crashing Euro 635 Mn into the red in the first half of its financial year.

Question 10

Time: 00:00:00
Read the passage given below and answer questions

It's apparently the fate of humankind never to be free of writing the history of pandemics. No matter how often they occur-- and they do occur with great frequency-- we collectively refuse to think about them until circumstances demand it. Then, when the infection passes, we put it out of our minds as quickly as possible. And so we again are Unprepared when the next contagion-- and this causes COVID-19 bursts upon us. Richard Conniff examines our long relationship with the infectious disease-- from the hard lessons to us been forced to learn from the brave, and often difficult characters, who have asked their lives to save us.

Smallpox taught us that we could prevent disease through inoculation and, as the 1700s ended, vaccination. By the new 1800s, cholera’s lesson was about sanitation and the need for centralized water and sewer systems. About the same time, one man was all heard of, Louis Pasteur, and one many of us haven't. Robert Koch became the co-fathers of germ theory. Tools they created are still used to identify and fight with what Conniff calls “ an astonishing rogues' ' gallery of deadly pathogens.

And yet here we are, again fighting on two fronts: the first against a new coronavirus sweeping the planet to devastating effects, the second, with each other, over domestic and international politics and whether we are willing to pay the price for prevention.

It's an important question for our planet. while we debate, the next pandemic draws nearer.

Which statement is correct according to the passage

pandemics keep coming periodically

pandemics keep coming periodically

all pandemic are not to be feared

all pandemic are not to be feared

there is no solution for pandemic
