Why: “Do you have any medical issues” is asked?

The purpose of asking this question is simply to see whether the candidate has any medical condition that in the future can lead to them not being able to work. This is an important question and a tricky one at that. A candidate with a concerning medical condition, might not be able to give their best performance. Similarly, HR or management might give lesser opportunities (promotion, business trips, etc) to an employee with health issues.

How to answer: “Do you have any medical issues?”

Although this sounds like a simple question, you need to answer it carefully. Serious medical conditions refer to heart diseases, lung problems, basically any condition for which you need to visit doctors regularly, and might have restrictions on travel. Issues like cold, flu and cough do not fall in this category.

Important Points to Remember:

Keep the following points in mind, when answering this question:-

Unless you have a serious condition, do not mention any disease.

Do not include seasonal health problems like fever due to change in climate etc.

Make sure you tell the interviewer that your health condition will not affect your productivity.

Always give examples of previous jobs/college time, where you were able to work effectively despite having health complications.

Let the interviewers know that you are on medications for your health condition and that your illness will not hamper your work.

I do not suffer from any serious health issues.

I have a slight issue where I sometimes get headaches from staring at a computer screen for a lengthy period of time. I have visited an ophthalmologist, who has prescribed me some medicines and I try to rest my eyes for a few minutes between work. It has not really affected my performance in previous jobs, and the condition is mostly under control.

Answer 3:

Not really a serious condition, but I do have certain allergies. Like I am allergic to nuts and garlic. So it is difficult for me to eat certain foods. And I have to carry some medicines with me. But this has never affected my work or job before.
