On 31st December 2019, the first case of Covid-19 was reported to the World Health Organization Country Office in Wuhan, China with symptoms of dissimilar respiratory infections. Corona Viruses are nothing but a group of viruses that impacts human beings via zoonotic transmission. Covid-19 was declared a pandemic on 11 March 2020.
Coronavirus's positive impact
- Past two decades we have been facing raise in environmental pollution due to an increase in industrialization, and the development of rural areas. When the lockdown was imposed back in 2020 March, people noticed a sudden decline in environmental pollution.
- The major impact was a boost in air quality in metropolitan cities like Delhi, and Mumbai at a more elevated rate due to fewer carbon emissions, and air quality increased up to 11.4%.
- Many companies started working from home during the lockdown, which does positively impact the environment by lessening the use of fossil fuels.
- During the lockdown, the rivers were recovering from pollution since industries were shut down.
Conclusion
Environmental pollution decreased due to covid-19 due to the shutting down of industries. Also implementing lockdown helped to improve the air quality due to less carbon dioxide emissions. Covid-19 has resulted in spotting several birds and animals on the street.
Coronavirus’s negative impact
- There was a sudden decline in oil and gas production due to high oil prices increased.
- The natural ecosystems and different flora and fauna are at great risk of the lockdown ordered by different countries.
- During covid, people started using face masks and Personal Protective Equipment which was mostly made of plastics and when disposed of could cause huge environmental damage.
- Due to the lockdown, natural parks, and sanctuaries were left unmonitored which led to illegal deforestation, hunting, etc.
- Due to the lockdown, the ecotourism activities shut down which led to unemployment and a huge decline in the economy of the country.
Conclusion
Usage of Personal Protective Equipements caused an increase in pollution. Also, an increase in coal and petroleum investments can be attributed to higher demand for electricity and other fuels since all these industries and production sections were brought to a standstill. There are positive impacts that are certainly good but negative must not be ignored.
