Why: “How is your absenteeism record like” is asked?
No one wants to hire an employee who will be irregular or not come to work everyday. Every company has their own leave policy, where they allot their employees a fixed number of paid leaves and sick leaves. However, there could be a chance where the employee will need to take leave from the office for more days then the allotted days. The aim of asking this question is to check exactly under which conditions will the employee do so. Another reason for asking this question, especially to an experienced candidate is to check their absenteeism record from their previous job.
How to answer: “How is your absenteeism record like?”
To answer this question you have to keep in mind that your potential employer does not want to hire someone who might be absent for a large amount of time or for an unspecified time period. But again if you tell the interviewer that you don’t need any leave or that you will work irrespective of any personal issues, then you might come off as trying to hard or not genuine.
In this case, the best answer for this question is a balanced answer where you tell the interviewer that you will not be taking unnecessary leaves but also make it clear that if you will be utilising your allotted leaves as when required.
a) Research about the company’s general leave policies.
b) Tell the interviewer the common reasons for which you might be needing to take leave. For example, you might need leave for monthly health check ups or bank work.
c) In clear pointings, tell the interviewer that if you are to take leave for a long period of time for a genuine purpose, you will make sure that your work is not hampered by that.
d) Do not tell the interviewer of any scenarios where you might need abrupt leaves.
e) Give a clear record from your previous job and if there was a scenario where you were taking leaves, specify the reasons for the same.
