Round 1: Coding + English Language Test

Coding Section Details:

Total Questions : 2

Total Time Limit: 55 Mins

Difficulty : Easy to Medium

  • C program to print N Prime Numbers.
  • Write a c program to reverse a number.

The candidate attempted both questions. The prime number solution was correct, but made a small mistake in the reverse number program. Still, cleared this round because logic and effort matter more than syntax perfection.

English Test Section Details:

Total Questions: 10

Duration: 10 minutes

Difficulty: Easy to Medium

Focus Areas: Vocab, idioms, sentence completion, comprehension

  • Choose the word most similar in meaning to “mandatory”
  • Choose the word opposite in meaning to “transparent”
  • Choose the correct meaning of the idiom: “To hit the nail on the head”
  • And two Sentence completion question.

The English section was straightforward. Most questions were about idioms and sentence correction. The candidate attempted all questions in 8 minutes.

If you have practiced basic grammar rules, this round is a breeze.

Round 2: Group Discussion 

Total Topics: 3

Duration: 30 minutes

Evaluation Criteria: Communication, teamwork, logical reasoning

Three topics were given and had to choose one.

Topic 1: Is it possible for AI to replace humans?

Topic 2: Is working for an MNC new kind of slavery?

Topic 3: Gender equality in the workplace

The candidate spoke twice, once in the beginning with a clear opening “AI can handle repetitive tasks, but creativity, ethics, and decision-making are human strengths.” and later while summarizing “AI will complement humans, not fully replace them.”

This helped the candidate stand out without dominating the discussion.

Round 3: HR + Technical Interview 

Total Questions: 10

Duration: 40 minutes

Format: Mix of technical + HR questions

This was the final and most crucial round for the candidate, where both technical expertise and personality fit were evaluated. The interview started with technical questions followed by HR-based discussion.

1. Tell me about yourself

The candidate gave a crisp introduction including academic background, key programming skills, and project work. They also highlighted their interest in problem-solving and eagerness to work on innovative projects at IBM.

2. Explain briefly your projects.

The candidate explained their final-year project in detail: the problem statement, technologies used (Java, SQL, REST APIs), challenges faced, and contributions they made. They emphasized outcomes like efficiency improvements and scalability.

3. What do you know about the OOPs concept?

The candidate explained the four pillars of OOP — Encapsulation, Abstraction, Inheritance, and Polymorphism with real-world examples from their project code.

4. What is SQL Query?

The candidate explained that an SQL query is a command used to interact with a relational database, for tasks like inserting, updating, deleting, and retrieving data.

5. What is the purpose of SQL?

The candidate said SQL stands for Structured Query Language, and its main purpose is to manage relational databases, inserting, retrieving, updating, and deleting data.

6. What is database partitioning?

The candidate mentioned that database partitioning is a process where a logical database is divided into independent parts for efficiency. It improves performance, scalability, and easier data management.

7. In which domain do you wish to have expertise.

The candidate expressed interest in cloud computing and AI, but also showed flexibility to explore different domains to learn and contribute effectively.

8. Tell me your hobbies and interests.

The candidate mentioned hobbies like reading tech blogs, solving coding problems, and playing strategy games, connecting them back to problem-solving skills relevant for IBM.

9. How do you manage your stress?

The candidate explained that they manage stress by prioritizing tasks, practicing time management, and taking short breaks to refresh. They also highlighted teamwork as a way to share workload effectively.

10. Why do you want to work with IBM?

The candidate highlighted IBM’s strong reputation in AI, cloud, and enterprise solutions, its learning-driven work culture, and global opportunities as key reasons.

The candidate felt that Round 4 tested not only technical depth but also confidence, communication skills, and cultural fit. Even when unsure, they explained their thought process, which impressed the panel.
