Find out who among the 5 has a pet fish?

Solution

Let us start by arranging the data methodically, and then we will add it in a table. We know that there are 5 people with 5 different parameters:- house color, nationality, drink, smoke and pet. From the hints, we know that:-
  • House 1 belongs to the Norwegian (clue no. 9)
  • The second house is blue(clue no. 9 and clue no. 14)
  • The green house is on the left of the white one(clue no. 4), but the green house can’t be the center one ( clue no. 5 and clue no. 8)  . Therefore it is the  fourth house and white is the fifth house(clue no. 4), leaving the center to be red and the first to be yellow.
  • The red house belongs to the Brit(clue no. 1)
  • The one living in green house drinks coffee.(clue no. 5)
  • The one in the yellow house smokes Dunhil and the one next to him has a horse.(clue no. 7 and clue no. 11)
1 2 3 4 5
House color yellow blue red green white
Nationality Norway Brit
Drink milk coffee
Smoke Dunhill
Pet horse
After this point, the puzzle gets trickier. Now we start the process of elimination, by referring the above table.
  • Among the remaining parameters we know that the one who drinks beer also smokes BlueMaster.(clue no. 12)
  • Therefore it can’t be the Norwegian or Brit. The Brit drinks milk and the Norwegian smokes Dunhill.(from the table)
  • We also know that the Dane drinks tea so he is living in houses 2 or 5. (clue no. 3) Also since the Dane drinks tea the only option left for the Norwegian is water.
  • The Swede has dogs, therefore he is in house 4 or 5.(clue no. 2)
  • Since Norwegian drinks water his neighbor is the one who smokes Blend.(clue no. 15)
  • Then the one who smokes BlueMaster and drinks beer is in house 5.(clue no. 12)
  • Since the Dane is drinking tea, not beer we can assume he is in house 2, (clue no.3) and the German is in house 4 since he smokes Prince(clue no. 13)  leaving the Swede in house 5 and has a dog.
  • From here we can say the Brit smokes Mall and has birds.(clue no.6)
  • Finally the Dane smokes Blend and his neighbor has a cat, which is the Norwegian since his other neighbor has birds(clue no.10 and 15)
  • Leaving the German, who has fish.(process of elimination)
1 2 3 4 5
House color yellow blue red green white

Drink water tea milk coffee beer
Smoke Dunhill Blend Mall Prince BlueMaster
Pet cat horse birds fish dog
