Persistent Prepositions and Conjunctions Quiz-1

Otherwise can mean if not. It is used for saying that if one thing does not happen, something else (usually bad) will happen. Otherwise can also be used to suggest that something is true because the situation will be different if it was not true.

Teachers don’t know why Atulya continuously failed in the examination.

The preposition 'in' is used before examination when speaking about taking an examination or during an exam.

Since Atulya was taking the exam and failed, we use 'in'.

Here, we are comparing two people in the form of positive degree of adjectives, so we use as for both the blanks.

Ranjan travelled with his mother all around the world when he was 18 years old.
‘With’ means 'in the same place as something or someone' or 'accompanying'.

Around is used to depict in or to various places or directions.

The Ganga flows In India. It is the oldest river in the country.

When we depict something which resides or is situated within a boundary, we use 'in' to name the enclosed area. Here, Ganga flows in India means Ganga flows within the boundaries of India.

We use the preposition “in” for an enclosed space or a place which is surrounded by boundaries. In the second blank, the same explanation is sufficient to predict the use of 'in'.

To save itself from predators, animals cast off part of their body at will and this is known as autotomy.

We use from to refer to the place where someone or something starts or originates. Here, the act of saving oneself, originates from the fear of predators.

To cast off means a piece of clothing that you no longer want and that you give to somebody else or throw away.
