Minimum Number of People: The Adventurer’s Puzzle
The Adventurer’s Puzzle here on this page consists of an adventurer who wants to go to the treasure island. The journey will take him a total of 6 days to reach, however, due to limited space, he can carry only 4 days worth of food and water. What is the minimum number of people he should take with him, such that he has enough food for the journey? Given every person he can take along will be able to carry 4 days’ worth of food only.
The minimum number of people he can take is 2.
So among the adventurer and two companions say A and B, they will have the following distribution of food:
Adventure – 4 days
Helper 1-4 days
Helper 2-4 days
On Day 1: All three of them will use Helper 1’s food and water. At the end of day 1, Helper 1 will leave the team and return. He will still have 1 day’s worth of food helping him in his return journey
On Day 2: Adventurer and Helper 2 will use Helper 2’s food and water. At the end of day 2, Helper 2 will leave and return. He will now have 2 days of food to help him on the return journey.
After Day 2, Adventurer has 4 days worth of food which he will use for the journey for 4 days and reach his destination on the 6th day.
