Definition of Ratio & Proportion

A ratio is defined as the contrast or shortened arrangement of two measures of a similar type. This comparison specifies the number of times one measure is equivalent to another. In simpler terms, ratio is a value, which articulates one measure as a portion of another one. For example, ratio of 5 to 6 is 5 : 6. If both ratios are equivalent, then it is said that they are in proportion where the symbol used is “::” or “=” to associate both the ratios.

Rules

  • When two numbers are represented in the form of another; this is done by expressing one number as a fraction of another. Thus, we have a: b; where ‘a’ is the antecedent, and ‘b’ is the consequent. Therefore when it is written 4:16, it can be re-written as 2:8 and further simplifying it can be said to be 1:4.
