Model Questions:

Q.1-There is a leak in the bottom of the tank. This leak can empty a full tank in 8 hours. When the tank is full, a tap is

opened into the tank which admit 6 liters per hour and the tank is now emptied in 12 hours. What is the capacity of the

tank?

a.) 8.8 liters

b.) 36 liters

c.) 144 liters

d.) Cannot be determined

Answer-C

solution-

Since the leak can empty the tank in 8 hours,

In one hour, part of the tank emptied by the leak = 1/8

Also, after opening the tap, in one hour, part of the tank emptied = 1/12

Let the tap can fill the tank in x hours. Therefore, In one hour, part of the tank filled by the tap = 1/x

As per question, (1/x) – (1/8) = 1/12

Or x = 24

Since the tap admits 6 liters of water per hour, it will admit (6*24) =144 liters of water in 24 hours, which should be the

capacity of the tank.

Q.2-The HCF of two numbers is 29 & their sum is 174. The possible numbers are

a.) 1,174

b.) 74,100

c.) 29,145

d.) None of these

Solution-C

Let the numbers be 29a and 29b. Then, 29a + 29b= 174 or 29(a + b) = 174 or, a + b = 174/29 = 6. Values of co-primes

(with sum 6) is(1, 5).
So, the possible pairs of numbers is (29 x 1, 29 x 5) i.e. 29 and 145, which will become the answer.

Q.3)-A trader mixes 26 kg of rice at Rs. 20 per kg with 30 kg of rice of other variety at Rs. 36 per kg and sells the mixture

at Rs. 30 per kg. His profit percent is:

a.)-No profit, no loss

b.)- 5%

c.)-8%

d.)-10%

Solution-B

C.P. of 56 kg rice = Rs. (26 x 20 + 30 x 36) = Rs. (520 + 1080) = Rs. 1600.

S.P. of 56 kg rice = Rs. (56 x 30) = Rs. 1680.

Gain =(80/1600*100) % = 5%

Q.4-In one hour, a boat goes 11km along the stream and 5 km against it. Find the speed of the boat in still water?

a.) -6

b.)-7

c.)-8

d.)-9

Solution-C

We know we can calculate it by 1/2(a+b)

=> 1/2(11+5) = 1/2(16) = 8 km/hr

Q.5-Which of the following is not a prime number?

a.)-31

b.)-61

c.)-71

d.)-91

Solution-D

91 is divisible by 7. So it is not a prime number.

Q.6-A and B can do a piece of work in 6 2/3 days and 5 days respectively. They work together for 2 days and then A

leaves.?

In how many days after that B will complete the work alone.

a.)-2 days

b.)-3 days

c.)- 1 ½ days

d.)-3 ½ days

Solution-B

3/20 * 2 + (2 + x)/5 = 1

x = 1 ½ days

Q.7-The distance between two stations A and B is 778 km. A train covers the journey from A to B at 84 km per hour and

returns back to A with a uniform speed of 56 km per hour. Find the average speed of train during the whole journey?

a.)-60.3 Km/hr

b.)-35.0 Km/hr

c.)-57.5 Km/hr

d.)-67.2 Km/hr

Solution-D

Average Speed=(2xyx+y)

“>Average Speed=(2xy/x+y)

 km/hr

=(2×84×5684+56)

“>=(2×84×5684+56)=(2×84×5684+56)

=(2×84×56140)

“>=(2×84×56140)=(2×84×56140)

=67.2 km/hr

“>=67.2 km/hr

Q.-8-If x3 + y3 = 9 and x + y = 3, then the value of x4+y4 is,?

a.)-21

b.)-17

c.)-0

d.)-25

Solution-B

Average Speed=(2xyx+y)

“>Average Speed=(2xyx+y)Average Speed=(2xyx+y)

 km/hr

=(2×84×5684+56)

“>=(2×84×5684+56)=(2×84×5684+56)

“>=(2×84×56140)=(2×84×56140)

“>=67.2 km/hr

Q.9-The number of arrangements that can be made with the letters of the word MEADOWS so that the vowels

occupy the even places?

a.)-720

b.)-144

c.)-120

d.)-204

Solution-B

The word MEADOWS has 7 letters of which 3 are vowels.

-V-V-V-
As the vowels have to occupy even places, they can be arranged in the 3 even places in 3! i.e., 6 ways. While the consonants can be
arranged among themselves in the remaining 4 places in 4! i.e., 24 ways.
Hence the total ways are 24 * 6 = 144.

Q.10-A bag contains 50 P, 25 P and 10 P coins in the ratio 5: 9: 4, amounting to Rs. 206.
Find the number of coins of each type respectively.
a.)-360,260,300

b.)-160,360,200

c.)-200,360,160

d.)-200,160,300

Solution:-C

let ratio be x.

Hence no. of coins be 5x ,9x , 4x respectively

Now given total amount = Rs.206

=> (.50)(5x) + (.25)(9x) + (.10)(4x) = 206

we get x = 40

=> No. of 50p coins = 200

=> No. of 25p coins = 360

=> No. of 10p coins = 160
