Any person with hobbies and interests outside the work place has a better cognitive and cultural development than the ones who don’t. While your interviews get more technical and analytical, questions about your hobby and interests can arise surprisingly. 

This trick question can seem to be unrelated with the interview atmosphere but has an underlying significance to it for the interviewer. The candidate if asked should be ready with a practiced answer and not fall into a puddle on coming across with it.

How to answer "What Are Your Hobbies & Interests" Interview Question

To answer this question a candidate must exercise a little caution. Do not just get all excited and start talking about what you like and what you don’t. There’s a reason why the interviewers throw such questions at you. They evaluate your communication skills and your ability to adapt to difficult or pressure situations along with team work and active level.

  1. Select your hobbies
    The hobby(s) shouldn’t be random partying and eating one. Try to associate the hobbies with the job profile you’re interviewing for and how you’ll execute your action with their help.

    Choose such hobbies which help you cultivate skills and qualities that might assist you to get a work done. for example hobby like playing a sport can help you gain the skills of teamwork and co-ordination that an interviewer looks for in an employee.

  3. Correlate the activity or hobby with your job
    Considering a particular hobby as essential for the interview try to create a direct connection with your job profile. For example, if software development if the job then let the interviewer know about the apps or games that you’ve developed as a hobby. It’ll add extra weightage to your answer.

  4. Demonstrate a situation and how you will use your skill to get a way out from it.
    Comprehending a situation, planning your action and then implementing it is a tiresome task. It gets easier if that situation seems familiar with your skill and how it can help to present the desired results. If you can relate and sight example you can add another point to your scoreboard.

Possible answer:

I have gradually cultivated playing board games and puzzles as my hobby.  I have a knick for puzzles which came from solving the jigsaw, general trivia, logic, cryptic, or even a Sudoku or crossword puzzle. My fascination for puzzles came from solving the Rubik’s cube and magazine crosswords. Over the years, I have realized that a tough puzzle can easily take anything between a few hours to a month to solve! There is always a table in my house adorned with an unfinished puzzle. In retrospect, this hobby has been a great teacher. This hobby has taught me to be patient, consistent with my effort, plan effectively, observe intently. I know with this level of patience that I’ve cultivated, I can remain calm and composite during my work and plan accordingly.

Possible answer:

I do not have one but two active hobbies that have brought more calm and mindfulness to me. These two activities that I am fond of are yoga and crochet. I was motivated to practice Yoga and Crochet by one of the greatest inspirational coaches. Crocheting is a meditative activity and embracing it has greatly enhanced my levels of concentration. As far as yoga is concerned. In our industry, we have to interact with too many people on a daily basis. Besides, we spend most of our time outdoors. But my hobbies help me connect with myself inner self and also make me stay indoors. Through them, I achieve balance and I thoroughly enjoy my ‘me time’.

“I love traveling, and have pledged to take atleast one trip every year. On my last trip to Italy, my flight was rescheduled to a later time and I had my tickets booked for show there the next day. As soon as I found out about the rescheduled time, I called my hotel to confirm a later check-in. I prayed to have some time to attend the show after i reach there and so I scheduled my ride from the hotel to the venue on priority. Once I got to my hotel, I had about 10 minutes to settle into my room and then leave for the venue.

Traveling allows me to adapt to new situations and use my organization and planning skills to ensure I have the most fun I can. I try to anticipate possible delays and other interruptions in my travel and always have a list of important contacts, such as my hotel front desk or travel coordinator. These strategies prepare me for many possible situations, which is how I approach my event and travel planning as an administrative assistant.”

“I like to design cars on my own through a software. Here are some samples I have created. ‘flash some design print outs.’ I also like to collect scale models of cars and motorbikes. Additionally, I like to read and collect both recent and aged car magazines. Recently, me and my friends who are also my batchmates in Automobile Engineering, have assembled a car. We have designed many parts like chassis, wishbone, brake disc etc. of the car from scratch and I can take you through it if time permits. It also has a functioning engine with direct fuel injection. “
