Model Questions:

1. Which one of the following is not a prime number?
A.  31
B.  61
C.  71
D.  91

91 is divisible by 7. So, it is not a prime number.

2.  What least number must be added to 1056 so that the sum is completely divisible by 23?

A. 2
B. 3
C. 18
D. 21

If the number 1056 is completely divisible by 23 means, the remainder should come zero. But if we divide 1056 by 23, the remainder is 2. So if 2 is added to 1056, we get remainder 0. Therefore the solution is 2.

3. The total cost of 8 buckets and 5 mugs is Rs. 92 and the total cost of 5 buckets and 8 mugs are Rs. 77. Find the cost of 2 mugs and 3 buckets.

1. Rs. 35
2. Rs. 70
3. Rs. 30
4. Rs. 38

CP of 1 bucket = Rs. X
CP of 1 mug = Rs. Y
∴ 8x + 5y = 92………….. (i)
5x + 8y = 77 …………….(ii)
By equation (i) × 5 – equation (ii) × 8.
40x + 25y – 40x – 64y
= 460 – 616 ⇒ − 39y = – 156⇒ y = 4
From equation (i),
8x + 20 = 92 ⇒8x = 92 – 20 = 72 ⇒ x = 9
∴ CP of 2 mugs and 3 buckets
= 2 × 4 + 3 × 9 = 8 + 27 = Rs. 35

4. The straight line 2x + 3y = 12 passes through:

1. 1st, 2nd and 3rd quadrant
2. 1st, 2nd and 4th quadrant
3. 2nd, 3rd and 4th quadrant
4. 1st, 3rd and 4th quadrant
The usual way to solve these type of questions is to put x = 0 once and find y coordinate. This would represent the point where the line cuts the Y axis.
Similarly, put y = 0 once and find x coordinate. This would represent the point where the line cuts the X-axis. Then join these points and you will get the graph of the line.
So when we put x = 0 we get y = 4.
When we put y = 0 we get x = 6.
So when we join these points we see that we get a line in 1st quadrant, which when extended both sides would go to 4th and 2nd quadrants. So option B.

5. A man’s age is  125%

“>125

of what it was  10

“>10

years ago, but   8313%

“>81%

of what it will be after  10

“>10

years. What is his present age?

A.  70

“>70

B. 60

C. 50

D.40

Let the age before  10

“>10

years  =x

“>=x

. Then,

125×100=x+10⇒125x=100x+1000⇒x=100025=40

“>125x100=x+10125x=100x+1000x=100025=40

Present age  =x+10=40+10=50

“>=x+10=40+10=50

6.  A man is  24

“>24

years older than his son. In two years, his age will be twice the age of his son. What is the present age of his son?

A. 23 years
B. 22 years
C. 21 years

D. 20 years

Let present age of the son  =x

“>=x=x

years
Then, present age the man  =(x+24)

“>=(x+24)=(x+24)

years

Given that, in  2

“>22

years, man’s age will be twice the age of his son
⇒(x+24)+2=2(x+2)⇒x=22

“>(x+24)+2=2(x+2)x=22

7.   A sum of money at simple interest amounts to Rs. 815 in 3 years and to Rs. 854 in 4 years. The sum is :

A. Rs. 700

B. Rs. 690

C. Rs. 650

D. Rs. 698

Simple Interest (SI) for 1 year = 854-815 = 39

Simple Interest (SI) for 3 years = 39 × 3 = 117

Principal = 815 – 117 = Rs.698

8. A sum fetched a total simple interest of Rs. 929.20 at the rate of 8 p.c.p.a. in 5 years. What is the sum?

A. Rs. 2323

B. Rs.1223

C. Rs. 2563

D. Rs. 2353

Explanation :

SI = Rs.929.20

P = ?

T = 5 years

R = 8%

P = 100×SIRT=100×929.208×5 = Rs.2323

“>P = 100×SIRT=100×929.208×5 = Rs.2323

9. There are 8 men and 10 women and you need to form a committee of 5 men and 6 women. In how many ways can the committee be formed?

A. 10420

B. 11

C. 11760

D. None of these

We need to select 5 men from 8 men and 6 women from 10 women

Number of ways to do this
8C5 × 10C6
8C3 × 10C4 [∵ nCr = nC(n-r)]
=(8×7×63×2×1)(10×9×8×74×3×2×1)=56×210=11760

“>=(8×7×63×2×1)(10×9×8×74×3×2×1)=56×210=11760=(8×7×63×2×1)(10×9×8×74×3×2×1)=56×210=11760

A. 720

B. 420

C. 5040

D. None of these

The word ‘LOGARITHMS’ has 10 different letters.

Hence, the number of 3-letter words(with or without meaning) formed by using these letters
10P3
=10×9×8=720

“>=10×9×8=720
